Abstract | ||||
The number of Arabic and Islamic inscriptions that have survived in Dagestan from the Islamic era is remarkable. This paper is the first study to publicise these inscriptions throughout Dagestan in a quantitative approach of field Archaeological Survey. Using statistical methods, this research reviews the inscriptions of buildings, mosques, houses, and educational schools for each region or in Dagestan as a whole. This article counted 7 inscriptions for educational schools, 202 inscriptions of residential houses, 35 inscriptions for minarets, 16 inscriptions of bridges and archways, 12 inscriptions for Religious Shrines, 27 inscriptions for military fortifications, this is other than tombstones inscriptions all-over Dagestan. Considering the language and content of these 299 inscriptions, they include 2130 different texts recorded in Arabic, Turkic, Persian, and Avaric languages. The inscriptions are shown in two tables along with figures, and the desired function, taking into account the most common styles that include language, function, written content, and stylistic features of each region. The paper analyses the surviving inscriptions of Islamic buildings in Dagestan in form and content, taking into account the statistical evidence of the field survey. It also concludes with a proposed recommended methodology for indexing the corpus of Islamic inscriptions in Dagestan | ||||
