Abstract | ||||
This paper seeks to propose sustainable strategic principles for urban renewal and understand the mechanisms for their application to the Al-Dubiya neighborhood in Riyadh as a model for historic neighborhoods in the Saudi Arabia. The study focused on three main principles: preservation and restoration, adaptive reuse, and gradual and integrated development. The results revealed significant deterioration in the neighborhood's buildings, necessitating planning interventions based on a sustainability approach. It was found that preservation and restoration contribute to preserving the architectural identity and strengthening the connection to the place, while adaptive reuse contributes to revitalizing abandoned buildings with functions that serve residents and support the urban fabric. Gradual development, on the other hand, provides a flexible mechanism for regenerating the neighborhood in phases, ensuring improved infrastructure and sustainable living. The study recommends integrating these principles into urban renewal plans for old residential neighborhoods, with an emphasis on community engagement to ensure the sustainability and success of interventions. | ||||
