Abstract | ||||
This study primarily aims to explore how the American Civil War impacted aristocratic Southern women by examining the shifts in their societal and familial roles. Unlike men, who engaged directly in battle, women faced the war's consequences by enduring and adapting to the harsh conditions it created. The novels analyzed in this thesis portray the struggles and suffering of these women as they cope with the destruction of their families and social status. This research argues that these novels are not solely centered on the Civil War itself but also highlight the survival and resilience of aristocratic women during and after the conflict. Key words: Civil war, South Woman and Cold Mountain.
