Abstract | ||
Introduction: The faulty remodeling process primarily affects the stapes in otosclerosis eventually causing it to become fixed and unable to vibrate properly. As a result, sound transmission is disrupted, leading to progressive hearing loss and tinnitus. Stapedectomy replaces the fixed stapes with a prosthesis, has shown promise in restoring hearing and alleviating tinnitus in many patients. Objective: The aim of the present study is to detect impact of stapes surgery in otosclerotic patients with tinnitus using tinnitogram and tinnitus handicap questionnaire Arabic version. Patients and methods: This randomized controlled trial was conducted on 32 patient with otosclerosis attending Assiut University Hospital and underwent stapedectomy operation from a period of June 2022 to October 2024. All patients included in this study underwent a comprehensive evaluation both preoperatively and three months postoperatively. Pure-tone audiometry was performed at both time points to assess changes in hearing thresholds. Additionally, each patient completed a tinnitogram and the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) before and after surgery to evaluate the presence and impact of tinnitus Results: In 27 out of 32 patients (84.4%) in our study there was postoperative AB gap measurements <20 dB, Our findings suggest improvement in tinnitus symptoms post-surgery. In our study there is significant difference between pre-operative and post-operative quality of life evaluated by tinnitus handicap questionnaire Conclusion: Stapes surgery is an effective intervention for otosclerosis patients, significantly improving hearing outcomes and reducing tinnitus severity in most cases.
