Abstract | ||||
Considered the essential building blocks of academic writing, lexical bundles (LBs), i.e., multi-word sequences that frequently co-occur in a register, have been a topic of great interest in applied linguistics research. On the one hand, the present study aimed at analyzing four-word LBs in research articles (RAs) written in English by L1 English researchers versus Egyptian (L2 English) researchers who published their RAs internationally and nationally, respectively. The RAs were written in two disciplinary areas, i.e., computer science and applied linguistics from the hard and social sciences, respectively. On the other hand, this study aimed to examine the use of the target LBs in the RAs written across the two target disciplines, irrespective of the researchers’ L1 versus L2 distinction. In these investigations, LBs were analyzed in terms of their frequency, structures, and functions. To this end, four sub-corpora were constructed for the analysis of LBs from a cross-linguistic perspective. Two sub-corpora consisted of international and Egyptian RAs written in computer science, whereas the other two sub-corpora comprised international and Egyptian RAs written in applied linguistics. To explore the target LBs from a cross-disciplinary perspective, two corpora of RAs written across the two disciplines were composed. The target LBs were identified by employing the AntConc software. The identified LBs were analyzed structurally and functionally adopting Biber et al.'s (1999) and Hyland's (2008a) taxonomies, respectively. The study results showed that there were commonalities and discrepancies between the studied corpora and sub-corpora, regarding their structural and functional usages of LBs. | ||||
