| Abstract | ||||
| This paper examines The Red Badge of Courage. This novel redefines war literature by focusing on the psychological struggles of Henry Fleming, a young soldier in the American Civil War. The novel explores fear, cowardice, and self-discovery as Henry evolves from anxiety to a complex form of courage. Key characters include Henry, who battles internal fears; Jim Conklin, a moral guide; Wilson, whose transformation mirrors Henry’s; and the Tattered Man, who forces Henry to face his cowardice. The novel employs impressionistic realism, using vivid imagery to depict war’s chaos. Irony and sarcasm challenge Henry’s self-perception, while symbolism, particularly the "red badge" (a wound), represents both courage and irony. Naturalism emphasizes the role of instinct and the environment in shaping behaviour.
