Abstract | ||||
This paper examines the emerging phenomenon of web-literature, a literary form that has developed in response to the digital revolution. Starting with the traditional importance of the printed book as a cultural and intellectual symbol, the study explores how the rise of digital technology has radically transformed the production, dissemination, and reception of literary texts. The shift toward e-books, literary blogs, and social media platforms has disrupted conventional publishing structures, empowering writers to self-publish and experiment with interactive and visual forms of writing, such as "typopoetry". The article presents contrasting viewpoints on the implications of digitization. On one hand, critics express concern about the decline in literary quality, the erosion of intellectual property rights, and the loss of the emotional connection associated with physical books. On the other hand, proponents highlight the democratization of literature, the ease of global access to knowledge, and the preservation of endangered literary heritage through digital archiving. The study cites real-world examples like Stephen King’s direct engagement with readers through his website and draws on critical perspectives like Roland Barthes’ theory of the "death of the author" to underscore the evolving dynamics between reader, writer, and text in the digital age. The paper also calls for deeper academic engagement with web-literature in the Arab world, particularly in Egypt and the Maghreb, emphasizing its sociolinguistic and cultural impact. Ultimately, we argue that digital tools are merely vehicles for literary expression; creativity and language remain human responsibilities. | ||||
