Abstract | ||||
Background: Mastitis is a common and economically important disease affecting goats worldwide, causing reduced milk production and lead to animal loss. This study aimed to assess the concentrations of certain interleukins and somatic cells in the milk and blood of goats and to study their relationship to mastitis resulting from experimental infection with S. aureus. Methods: A virulent S. aureus isolate was used to experimentally infect a group of goats. Milk and blood samples were collected at various time points post-infection. The samples were then analyzed for the presence of bacterial cells, specific interleukins, and somatic cells. Results: The results showed a significant increase (P<0.05) in IL-6 levels in both blood and milk, with IL-6 values in milk being higher. IL-8 levels recorded a significant increase (P<0.05) in both blood and milk over the different periods. The results of the current study also showed significant differences ( P≤0.01) in IL-10 level in blood and milk over the periods studied. Somatic cells in milk also recorded highly significant differences at the significance level (P≤0.01). Conclusion: This study showed that experimental S. aureus mastitis in goats leads to a clear immune response represented by a significant increase in the levels of inflammatory interleukins (IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10) in both blood and milk, in addition to a significant increase in the number of somatic cells in milk. These results suggest that these biomarkers could be important markers of the inflammatory response and potential diagnostics of bacterial mastitis in goats. | ||||
