| Abstract | ||
| Background: Hemodialysis catheters are used in different situations in hemodialysis (HD), but are attended by adverse events that may lead to patient morbidity or mortality, especially owing to bacteremia. Objectives: The purpose of this research is to evaluate the impact of HD catheter-related infections on the performance and longevity of hemodialysis catheters. Methodology: Eighty-four hemodialysis patients participated. Patients were divided into two groups based on whether or not their HD catheters were infected. In addition to standard laboratory tests and blood cultures, KT/V was measured. Echocardiography was done. Results: The risk of HD catheter infection increased significantly with longer catheter and HD duration, and in patients with previous HD catheter infection. HD catheter infection adversely affected dialysis adequacy, decreased HD catheter and patient survival, and was complicated by metastatic infection. Subclavian catheter insertion was more associated with poor outcome. Both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms were nearly equal, and the type of micro-organisms did not predict the outcome. Conclusion: HD catheter infection increase with longer catheter and HD duration. It adversely affects dialysis adequacy, decreases HD catheter and patient survival, and can be complicated by metastatic infection. | ||
