Abstract | ||
This study attempts to provide a critical investigation to selected Russian-Ukrainian war political cartoons by two Western cartoonists with the heuristic apparatus provided by Fauconnier and Turner’s (1998/2002) blending model. Blending is discussed in reference to two approaches to humor which are the incongruity- resolution (IR) model of Suls (1972/1983) and the relevance theory of Forceville (2020) and Wilson & Sperber (1995). Detailed discussion of two examples aims to testify to the widespread and multifarious applicability of the incongruity-relevance-blending approach to the analysis of the political cartoons. In the selected cartoons, two frames are depicted which are the frame of the scene of rape and the frame of deflowering. In each frame, rape has a strong relationship with the Russian victory and the Ukrainian defeat. Also, an attempt is made in order to explain humor and non-humor aspects in the selected cartoons. Humor arises from the small details in the cartoon while non-humor cartoon is the result of a subversive frame that challenges the values of the viewer. | ||
