Abstract | ||
This paper aims at discussing the concept of diaspora in Jhumpa Lahiri ‘s selected short stories which are taken from Interpreter of Maladies and Unaccustomed Earth collections. In these short stories, Lahiri discusses skillfully diaspora and identity crisis. She was able to delve in psyche of its characters and was able to reveal their inner struggles and conflicts. Diaspora is the voluntary or forced movement of people from their homelands into the new regions. It has also arrived in a new geographical and cultural context which serves as the meeting place of two cultures; the migrant and the host. Lahiri sets her short stories based on her personal background as a daughter of Bengali parents who immigrated to the U.S.A with her family. Lahiri is a terrific writer in her description of the sufferings of exiles. This paper has presented an analysis of the split identities of individuals living in exile. . | ||
