Abstract | ||
Lung cancer is one of the major causes of death worldwide. Microalgae as source of high value-added compounds are considered as very promising source of these bioactive molecules. Spirulina platensis a natural source of essential bioactive compounds, including antioxidants, vital minerals, and a comprehensive profile of amino acids and fatty acids could inhibit many types of cancerous cells proliferation through apoptosis and cell death. The current study aimed to assess the anticancer effects of the ethanolic extract of S. platensis on lung cancer. The MTT experiment revealed that S. platensis toxicity on lung cancer cells was concentration- dependent. GC-MS analysis that the main compounds responsible for the bioactivity were the study concluded that S. platensis ethanolic extract and fractions had a sufficient amount of bioactive compounds that possess anticancer activity (IC50 of 17.33 ± 1.06 µg/mL), which could be a promising source for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical ingredients cancer cell line. | ||
