| Abstract | ||
| Flax is a multipurpose crop with many cultivars distributed around the world. A set of 31 macro-morphological, stem anatomical, palynological and technological characters (including seed dimensions, oil yield and fiber quality parameters) were recorded comparatively in a data matrix for a random sample of 84 cultivars of flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) obtained from eight different countries around the world. A conventional identification key was developed, along with detailed cultivar descriptions, using the DELTA key-generating software. It is quite uncommon to find reliable methods for identifying several agricultural varieties of different crops. This procedure is much simpler, faster, cost-effective and equally efficient substitute of such elaborate, costly, and time-consuming techniques as seed protein screening and image analysis of seeds, which have hitherto been applied to flax cultivar identification. It is easily expandable to be applied to other cultivars of the same or of other countries and can be rendered globally accessible. | ||
