Abstract | ||
Fuel stations in Egypt have gradually changed over the past decades. Historically, these sites were seen as “non-places” characterized by transience and functional redundancy. They were known primarily as service points for fueling vehicles, car services, or mini markets. However, an architectural evolution has occurred, particularly in new urban areas such as New Cairo. This shift marks significant move from purely utilitarian service nodes to well-designed public spaces within the urban fabric that encourage social interaction and community engagement, integrating social, and experiential dimensions over time. This research aims to assess this transformation of fuel stations from mere service providers into social public spaces by developing a comprehensive rubric for evaluating the ambiance changes in transformed stations in New Cairo. It adopts mixed method approach; qualitative field observation followed by a scoring on Likert scale and a quantitative field survey. The rubric merges the placemaking principles from the Project for Public Spaces with the experiential ambiance frameworks established by Réseau International Ambiances, enabling a multi-dimensional evaluation. Through comparative case studies and 105 conducted responses, the research systematically measures ambiance, examining changes in spatial configuration, public integration, sensory experience, and social context from the previous design to the current state. The findings demonstrate how ambiance-focused design redefines fuel stations from transitional service sites into urban social hubs. By emphasizing human-centred and sensory criteria, the study provides practical insights for planners, designers, and community stakeholders seeking to create more inclusive, and great public spaces in rapidly growing urban areas like New Cairo. | ||
