Abstract | ||
The study addressed the development of using abstract mosaics as a tool for artistic and aesthetic expression by drawing inspiration from map drawings and satellite imagery. This concept was applied to one of the walls of the passenger terminal building at Borg El Arab Airport in Alexandria. The study reviewed the evolution of mosaics from documenting historical events to modern abstract expression that aligns with contemporary architecture, focusing on the visual values derived from materials, texture, and lighting. The researcher drew inspiration from satellite images showcasing the contrast between water bodies and landmasses, resembling mosaic techniques. This idea was based on various design experiments inspired by satellite images of cities worldwide. The experiments focused on visual relationships between shapes and spaces, utilizing the characteristics of materials such as natural stone and glass. A façade in the passenger terminal building at Borg El Arab Airport was chosen to host the artwork due to its simple design, allowing for the addition of abstract mosaics inspired by a bird's-eye view of the world. Two final design proposals were presented, both based on reimagining maps that combine water and landmasses with an abstract touch, highlighting a balance between visual movement and stillness. The design was executed using collage techniques to achieve visual harmony. The study contributes a model that integrates abstract art with architectural aesthetic functionality, inspired by an innovative modern vision. | ||
