Abstract | ||
Translation is a peculiar and essential human activity that is considered a bridge for cultural exchange between speakers of different languages. Each nation possesses a legacy composed of cultural references, which are used in various contexts of daily life. Among these cultural references are coarse or vulgar expressions and words, such as insults and offensive terms. Vulgar expressions are a fundamental part of every culture, as they constitute a pillar of its sociocultural structure. In this regard, the translator must have both linguistic and extralinguistic competence to adequately convey the meaning or find an equivalent in the target language. The primary objective of this study is to analyze the translation of coarse expressions from Arabic to Spanish to determine the most commonly used translation techniques in this area, as well as to identify the challenges that arise during the translation process. To this end, we have compiled samples from the Spanish translation of the novel Palace of Desire by Naguib Mahfouz. Since the translation of patterns with sociocultural nuances requires the use of appropriate techniques to effectively transfer the code from the original text to the translated one, in this study, and due to the linguistic nature of the corpus, we will use the analytical-descriptive method. This will allow us to examine in detail the translation techniques employed in rendering these expressions from Arabic to Spanish, as well as to identify the challenges and difficulties that translators may face in this process. | ||
