Abstract | ||
Marc Dugain, in his novel La Chambre des officiers (1998), explores World War I through the story of Adrien Fournier, an officer severely wounded in the face in the early days of the conflict. Inspired by a true story, this novel highlights the brutality of war and its physical and psychological consequences on soldiers, particularly those known as gueules cassées (the disfigured survivors). Claude Duchet, a key figure in sociocriticism, developed analytical tools to explore the interactions between literary texts and the social context from which they emerge. Among these tools, the concept of the "sociogram" plays a central role. In his essay La Méthode sociocritique, exemple d'application : le sociogramme de la guerre, Duchet applies this concept to analyze the representation of war in literature. The sociogram is a tool for analyzing social relationships and group dynamics within a literary text. In La Chambre des officiers, it helps examine the interactions between characters, particularly within the military hospital where officers disfigured by war are treated. Through a sociocritical approach, particularly by applying Claude Duchet's method, we will explore how the text portrays the loss of humanity in various forms. This analysis will focus on two key aspects: War and its atrocities Lost humanity | ||
