Abstract | ||
The study examines the characteristics of "metatheatre" in the works of the Turkish writer "Vedat Demirci" as applied to the plays "Glory to Mother", "Take the News from the Child", and "The Guilty Child", published in his book "From Chapter to Theatre" in 2012. The writer employed the features of "metatheatre" as defined by "Lionel Abel" and "Richard Hornby". Some Turkish studies and research have addressed the traits of "metatheatre", yet none have focused on the features of "metatheatre" in the modern Turkish writer Veidat Demirci". The study's central issue is framed by the following main question: To what extent has "Vedat Demirci" successfully utilised the mechanisms of "metatheatre" in his plays? The study relies on a "descriptive" methodology. The study found that the writer "Vedat Demirci" employed the following characteristics of "metatheatre" in his three plays "Glory to Mother", "Take the News from the Child", and "The Guilty Child": "theatre within theatre", "the multiplicity of dramatic roles of the character", "reference to reality in the text", "use of stereotypical characters", "interplay between dream and reality", and "tragicomedy". The writer "Vedat Demirci" repeatedly employed the feature of "theatre within theatre" in the three plays under study. | ||
