| Abstract | ||
| The "2030 Sustainable Development Goals" agenda serves as a vision and roadmap to address urgent global challenges over the next fifteen years, continuing the Millennium Development Goals plan. It includes broader and more inclusive concepts for sustainable development, especially in terms of environmental preservation and sustainability. As the environment is the space where development occurs, it is both a goal and a purpose of any development process, The Greater Cairo region is one of the largest urban agglomerations in the world and the largest in the Middle East and Africa. This region has experienced rapid and significant changes in its urban growth and expansion, particularly in recent decades, due to accelerating population growth. This paper analyzes the impact of the accelerating urban growth dynamics in Greater Cairo between 1978 - 2020 by monitoring urban expansion and determining the direction of urban extensions. It aims to understand the growth dynamics and their direct effects on environmental dimensions and the achievement of sustainable development goals in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030. The paper also predicts the future growth pattern for 2030, attempting to analyze the dialectical relationship between urban expansion and the environmental dimension in one of Egypt’s most sensitive regions. It connects urban realities with environmental targets in the national vision using evaluation and critical analysis tools to minimize the environmental impact of urban growth, proposing guidelines to enhance the region’s resilience in facing environmental challenges and ensuring its sustainability by 2050. | ||
