| Abstract | ||
| This study intends to analyse, compare and contrast Mahesh Dattani’s Brief Candle (2010), Athol Fugard’s The Painted Rocks at the Revolver Creek (2018) Yasser Qubailat’s Sea and Sand (2016), and Karim El Sharkawy’s Bunkers’ Dwellers (2019), in terms of Neo-Existentialism within the genre of the Theatre of the Absurd. It is argued that the selected playwrights are concerned with human beings’ problems of existence in the world of their plays. Additionally, a link between Neo- Existentialism and the Theatre of the Absurd is illustrated in the plays to prove that they exhibit features of both Neo-Existentialism and The Theatre of the Absurd as the characters suffer from existential problems. The four selected plays reveal the issue of uncertainty. This uncertainty which dominates the four plays reflects one of the existential views of the modern society, where nothing is certain, and everything is questioned and manipulated through the use of language. Also, the major themes in the four texts seem to be that of isolation; physical, spiritual and mental isolation. This is obvious from the setting of the four plays. The characters in the four texts are alienated and isolated from their society and this demonstrates how they are spiritually and physically delineated from their community in an absurd manner. Isolation, strangeness, exile and detachment are the major themes of absurdity which clarify the absurd nature of the four texts. | ||
