| Abstract | ||
| A trauma is mainly a psychological wound that negatively impacts the personality of the victim. When adolescents are specifically traumatised, their maturation and character development are often obstructed. Parental abuse is one cause for the trauma of children and young adults alike. However, if treated correctly, recovery from this kind of trauma is often possible and can even result in posttraumatic growth, a type of positive character development and maturation that happens post trauma. Hence, this paper will investigate Sara Barnard’s novel Beautiful Broken Things (2016), which tells the story of the traumatised adolescent Suzanne Watts, who endures abuse and neglect from her parents. The novel shows the emotional and physical abuse that Suzanne experiences and how negatively her personality is affected. Also, the paper will analyse the posttraumatic growth that Suzanne goes through in the sequel Fierce Fragile Hearts (2019) and how her personality becomes more mature after properly recovering from her trauma. | ||
