Abstract
يعد مفهوم التنوع الأرضي Geodiversity أحد الاهتمامات البحثية المعاصرة التي تدرس مدى تنوع وثراء البيئة الطبيعية لسطح الأرض بمکوناتها وعناصرها الطبيعية (الطبوغرافية – الجيولوجية – الجيومورفولوجية – الهيدرولوجية – التربة) .
وقد اشتق مفهوم التنوع الأرضي من أحد مجالات البحث  الحديثة هو التنوع البيولوجي Biodiversity  ، وهو يعني بدراسة مظاهر التنوع والثراء بالکائنات الحية ، واتسع مجال هذا المفهوم البحثي خلال قمة الأرض الذي عقد فى مدينة ريودى جانيرو بالبرازيل عام 1992 وأصبح يدرس العلاقات التبادلية بين النظم البيئية Ecosystems وتطبيقاتها في مجال حماية وإدارة البيئة الطبيعية لسطح الأرض  وبصفة خاصة مناطق المحميات الطبيعية بکافة أنواعها مثل الحدائق الوطنية الطبيعية Geoparks ومحميات المحيط الحيوي، ومناطق التراث القومي الطبيعي، ومحميات المعازل الطبيعية، ومحميات المناظر الطبيعية، ومحميات الموارد الطبيعية، ومحميات الحياة والتراث التقليدي، ومحميات التراث القومي العالمي.
