Abstract | ||||
This study focuses on the effect of the first language (Jordanian Arabic) on L2 (English language) production. It aims to find out whether Jordanian professors whose first language is Arabic speak L2 (English) with a native–like accent or with the accent of their first language. Moreover, the role played by certain factors like the amount of exposure to L2 and their formal instruction on the production of L2 English is highlighted in this study. Towards this end, the speech of 20 professors was recorded and analyzed. Interference effects were also analyzed sound by sound. Thus, it was found out that professors who had a high amount of exposure to L2 English and who got their formal instruction in private (mainly international) schools display less L1 Jordanian Arabic than those with no/ little exposure to L2 and who got their formal instruction in public schools. | ||||
