Abstract | ||||
Background and study aims: Transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1) is a member of the transforming growth factor β family and participates in cell growth, proliferation, and differentiation as a multifunctional cytokine. This work aims to evaluate the role of serum levels of transforming growth factor β1 in the detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Egyptian patients with cirrhosis due to chronic hepatitis C infection (HCV). patients and methods: In this study, 35 patients with HCC with cirrhosis, 30 patients with cirrhosis without HCC, and 20 healthy volunteers were selected. Serum TGF β1 protein level (pg / ml) of all subjects by immunoassay . Results: Among the study groups, serum levels of TGFβ1 were found with highly statistically significant differences. TGFβ1 level ≥733.9 (pg / ml) can diagnose the presence of HCC . Conclusion: The serum level of TGFβ1 can be used as a diagnostic marker for patients with HCC. Key words: Transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1), Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), Hepatitis C virus (HCV). | ||||
