Abstract | ||||
Objective: To determine the effects of cinnamon against fluoxetine on renal function, lipid profiles and oxidative stress. Design: Randomized controlled study Animals: Thirty-twoalbino rats Procedures: Rats were allocated into four groups, control, FLX, Cin and FLX+ Cin group for 60 days. Blood samples were collected for measurement of kidney, liver function and lipid profiles. The left kidney was taken for determination of oxidative stress parameters, histopathological evaluation and detection of levels of caspase, renin and NRF2 genes. Procedures: FLX group administered fluoxetine 10 mg/kg Bwt. Cin group administered cinnamon 50 mg/kg body weight. FLX+ Cin group received fluoxetine at a concentration of 10 mg/kg body weight and after 30 minutes received cinnamon extract at dose of 50 mg/kg body weight. Results: Administration of fluoxetine exhibited a higher level of urea, uric acid and creatinine. Administration of Cin alone or with FLX improved kidney functions and antioxidant parameters. Marked increase was detected in FLX group compared to the Cin and Cin+FLX groups. Administration of cinnamon with fluoxetine leads to improvement in the lipid profiles. Moreover, there was a significant upregulation in renin and caspase 3 genes in FLX and FLX + Cin treated groups. The renal NRF2 was downregulated in FLX group and increased in Cin group. Histopathological pictures of renal sections showing tubular dilation with renal epithelial cells degeneration, necrosis and fibrosis in FLX group. Conclusion and clinical relevance: Cinnamon may be used to counteract the negative effect of fluoxetine drug on renal tissue. | ||||
