Abstract | ||||
Background: The term adolescence means ‘growing mature by developing’ and refers to the transition period from childhood to adulthood. The adolescent has certain expectations from the family, self and society. Adolescent’s failure to meet these expectations or adopt to these changes leads to negative behavioral problems. Aim of the study was to assess the relationship between parenting style as perceived by adolescents and their behavioral problems. A descriptive corelational design was used to achieve the aim of this study. Setting: Five Preparatory schools at Kafr Sakr city in El- Sharkia Governorate, which are affiliated to the Ministry of Education. Subject: Simple random sampling of 260 students were selected. Tools of data collection: Two tools were used; the first tool was used to assess perceived parenting styles. The second tool was used to assess behavioral problems among adolescents. Results: There was highly significant negative correlation between parents’ total parenting style pattern and behavioral problems among students. Conclusion: The most commonly perceived parenting styles were acceptance, tolerance, equilibrium, caring and equality were negatively correlated with harassment, rebellion and disobedience, lying, aggression, stealing and truancy. Recommendations: Health education programs for teachers and parents about importance of this period, health risk behaviors and their predictors. | ||||
