Abstract | ||||
The present work was conducted aiming to study mothers' practices toward themselves during pregnancy, towards their infants, and toward female circumcision in Maawa El sayadeen. A house to house survey was conducted and all available families were enrolled in the study. Mothers in the child bearing age and had a pregnancy in the last five years 1611mothers], mothers have infants less than two years [264mothers], and mothers having girls less than 18 years [1122mothers] were included in the study. An interviewing questionnaire was used to collect data about mothers' education and health practice, including data about vaccination, breast feeding pattern and behavior of mothers in certain health conditions for mothers having infants less than two years. Data concerning antenatal, natal and postnatal care for mothers in the childbearing age. Data concerning female circumcision for mothers have girls less than 18 years. The results of the present study revealed that the highest percentage of infants of the educated mothers [76%] had completed their vaccination schedule for their ages, compared to 68% of those of non-educated mothers. 90.2% had breast fed their infants. 81% of educated mothers compared to 52.4% of non-educated mothers gave drugs during infant coughing. During diarrhea 46.6% of educated mothers compared to 32% of non-educated gave fluids and drugs. 70.9% of mothers received antenatal care with higher percentage among educated mothers [96.9%] compared to 68.3% of non-educated mothers. Circumcision of females was noticed among 55.4% of mothers with higher percentage among non-educated [63.1%] compared to 44.5% of educated mothers. In general about 47% and 58% of mothers reported good level of practice for health care of their infants and for themselves respectively, while more than one half of mothers reported poor behavior towards circumcision of their daughters [55.4%]. The results also showed that the higher mean overall score either for health care of infants or mothers themselves and also for their behavior towards circumcision were observed among educated mothers compared to non-educated. | ||||
