| Abstract | ||||
| Background: Aging is defined as a series of physiological changes that cause an organism's basic processes to deteriorate. As people get older, their immune systems lose their ability to defend the body against external invaders, and their autophagic capacity, which entails the gradual death of bodily cells, decreases. Ginkgo Biloba (GB) has been marketed as a therapeutic dietary supplement with a potent antioxidant capability to counteract various disorders. Aim: This work was done to investigate GB's effect on the aging changes of cervical lymph nodes. Materials and Methods: Thirty male albino rats were utilized in the experiment, and they were divided into three groups. Group I: (adult rats aged three months) used as adult control. Group II: (15 months aged) represented aged control rats. Group III: aged rats treated with GB for three months orally, at a dose of 100 mg per Kg every day. The cervical lymph nodes were dissected and processed at the end of the experiment for light and electron microscopy examination as well as immunohistochemistry analysis of LC3, CD3,CD19, CD86 and IBA1. Results: The aged cervical lymph nodes showed disorganization of cortical lymphatic follicles with depletion of lymphocytes in the cortex and the medulla. There was also dilated congested medullary sinuses. Many electron-dense small lymphocytes and many plasma cells were observed. Immunohistochemically, a significant decrease in LC3, CD3 , CD19 ,CD86 immunostaining, while there was a significant increase in IBA1 immunostaining. After treatment with GB for three months, improvement of the lymph node architecture was observed. Conclusion: The GB has an ameliorating effects on the aging changes of cervical lymph nodes. | ||||
