Abstract | ||||
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the dietary acidifier lauric and benzoic acids when given alone or in combination with each other on the immunohematological parameters, histopathological and ultrastructural changes of O. niloticus. Design: Randomized controlled study. Animal Models: The experiment was performed on 120 juvenile Nile tilapia, weighting (50 ± 6.14 g). Procedures: fish were divided into four experimental groups, Control group (C), Benzoic Acid group (BA): each fish was supplemented with benzoic acid at dose of (1g/kg diet) for 30 successive days, Lauric Acid group (LA): each fish in this group was supplemented with lauric acid at dose of (1g/kg diet) for 30 successive days, and combination group (LA+BA): each fish was supplemented with a combination of benzoic acid at dose of (1g/kg diet) and lauric acid at dose of (1g/kg diet) for 30 successive days. Results: Our study revealed moderate degenerative changes in the liver, kidney, and intestine of benzoic acid with mild ultrastructural changes (dilation of RER, nucleus with few cytoplasmic vacuoles) compared to the control. However, slight to minimal pathological and ultrastructural changes in lauric and combination groups. A significant increase in Hb, total leukocytes was recorded in lauric and combination in compared to control Conclusion: Our data suggested that single acidifiers could attribute to mild to moderate pathological lesions on fish tissue. Meanwhile, the combined supplementation of two organic acids had safer effect which could promote synergetic effects on fish tissue and immunity. | ||||
