Abstract | ||||
Acrylamide (AA), an industrial compound, causes reproductive toxicity in female rats due to oxidative stress. In the present study, we investigated the protective effects of Curcumin (Cur) against acrylamide-induced ovarian toxicity in female rats. The animals utilized in this study were divided into 4 groups: GI- Control group received a daily oral administration of 0.5ml DMSO (5%) saline(9%), GII- Acrylamide (AA) group received acrylamide (20 mg/kg b.w.) for 21days, GIII- Acrylamide + Curcumin (AA + Cur) group treated with Curcumin (100 mg/kg b.w.) after acrylamide intoxication for 21 days, GIV- Curcumin (Cur) group that received only Curcumin (100 mg/kg b.w.). In our study, we observed acrylamide intoxication to be associated with a significant (P<0.05) increase in the serum levels of estradiol, luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone (T), and tumor marker CA125 and CEA. The mean values of serum progesterone (P4), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) significantly decreased in the AA treated group as compared to the control. Histological investigations revealed that AA treatment results in an apparent regression of ovarian follicles, cyst formation, and corpus luteum degeneration. Treatment with curcumin restored altered ovarian histology and serological indices concomitantly towards normal | ||||
