Abstract | ||||
Cisplatin (Cis) is a commonly used drug for the treatment of cancer especially breast cancer but the side effects of this drug affecting on other body systems. The aim of this work is to use Ellagic acid (Ell) to ameliorate the adverse effects of this drug. Forty male albino rats are randomly divided into 4 groups, the Control group, Cis group, Cis+Ell group, and Ell acid group. Biochemical estimation of serum lipid profile and sexual hormones (FSH, LH, and testosterone) were performed and liver sections from all groups were processed for histopathological examination. Our results revealed that treatment with Ell caused a significant improvement in all biochemical parameters after Cis administration where Ell caused a significant decrease in the levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL while increased HDL levels. For hormonal levels in the Cis+Ell group, Ell caused a significant elevation for the concentration of FSH, LH, and testosterone although these levels were significantly lowered by Cis in the second group. Histopathological examination revealed that Ell can cause a tremendous recovery in the hepatic architecture after a distortion caused by Cis. In conclusion, Ell treatment can diminish the negative effects caused by the administration of Cis. | ||||
