Abstract | ||||
The regions of crossing were both geographical and figurative. There were, of course, actual borderlands between countries, as well as the fictional borders depicted in literature which were used symbolically. Regions of crossing were used in the stories to represent the stage where the hero moves from a positive field into a negative one. Here the hardships and obstacles the protagonist encounters are an analogy for the cultural and the social obstacles the Egyptian would encounter when travelling abroad. But the thought of traversing these obstacles and borders also engendered excitement as well as fear. Descriptions of foreign places were used to evoke a sense of adventure, especially border regions with forests, seas, waterways and the inhabited areas between two worlds, where the greatest dangers lay. | ||||
