Abstract | ||||
The analysis of the proximate determinants of fertility has widely been recognized in demographic literature. There are various methods that additively decompose the change in fertility rates, namely Bongaarts's, Hobcraft and Little's, and Kim and Strobino's. These methods are compared, and a new method is proposed. A numerical comparison between all methods is conducted. The four methods are then applied to Egypt using both 1988 and 1992 Demographic and Health Surveys. The Proposed method provides proportional individual effects which are very close, if not equal, to those of Kim and Strobino's. The Proposed method is simple and lacks the complexity in other methods. | ||||
