Abstract
Background: Intrauterine contraceptive device is a popular method of contraception. Continued recommendation about regular checking of its string after insertion is present. Aim: To evaluate the role of feeling intrauterine device string in the prediction of its expulsion. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the obstetrics and gynecology department, Suez Canal university hospital from August 2020 to August 2021. We recruited women attending the outpatient clinic following predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Women eligible for the study were subjected to history taking (IUD type, indication for IUD use either for contraception or therapeutic, duration of use, and their current complaints). Women were asked about checking their IUD strings. Transvaginal ultrasound was done to determine IUD expulsion. Results: The Cu- IUD was commonly used by the participants (95.9%). The mean duration of insertion was 37.11 ± 32.67. Only 40.7% of them used to feel the threads and being uncomfortable to feel the threads (38.4%) was the most common cause for not feeling it. Expulsion occurred in 15.9% of the participants. Feeling the IUD strings was not a significant predictor for IUD expulsion (p-value 0.320). Type of IUD – Cu IUD- significantly predicted expulsion (p-value 0.029) as well as the duration of insertion (short period) (p-value 0.009). Conclusion: Checking IUD strings didn’t predict its expulsion.
