Abstract | ||||
Background: Patients with type 2 diabetes have been shown to have an elevated prevalence of hypomagnesemia. Few studies were performed on it. To our knowledge this work has not been done in Faculty of Medicine, Zagazig University. Aim: To evaluate association of serum magnesium with controlled and uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus. Subjects and methods: This case control study was conducted on 716 patients presented at Internal medicine Department and outpatient clinic in Al-Ahrar Teaching Hospital, and Zagazig university hospital on adult patients’ diabetic type 2, males and females and normal people not diabetic not have other comorbidities. Magnesium was measured in all subjects. Results: Hypomagnesemia higher frequency in DM uncontrolled group was 92.2%, followed by DM control group 24.4%, and there is no hypomagnesaemia in normal group and normal magnesium level in normal control group Conclusion: Hypomagnesemia had higher frequency in DM uncontrolled group than DM control group. It is linked to poor glycemic control and diabetic consequences include retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy. | ||||
