Abstract | ||||
Background: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide with a high risk of morbidity and early mortality. Aim: To evaluate the biomechanical properties of the cornea in patients with DM type 2 which may help in understanding the effects of long-standing DM type 2 on corneal biomechanics aiming for improving the quality of vision of those patients. Subjects and Methods: The current study was a case-control study, performed in the ophthalmology department of Suez Canal University Hospital on 64 eyes. Fundus examination, ocular response analyzer, and central corneal thickness by corneal pachymeter were obtained between January 2016 and January 2020. Results: Our results revealed that the corneal biomechanics in the diabetic group are significantly higher compared with those of the control group as the mean CH is 9.4±2.33 mmHg in the control group and 11.35±3.06 mmHg in the diabetic group. The difference in CH between the two groups is statistically significant, (p-value = 0.0001). The mean CRF is 9.48±2.04 mmHg in the control group and is 11.83±3.30 mmHg in the diabetic group and the difference in CRF between the two groups is statistically significant, (p-value = 0.0001). Conclusions: In conclusion, the corneal biomechanics in the diabetic group are significantly higher compared with those of the control group as the mean CH is 9.4±2.33 mmHg in the control group and is 11.35±3.06 mmHg in the diabetic group.
