Abstract | ||||
This research aims to study the determinants of fish production and consumption in Egypt. The results revealed fluctuations in the total local fish production, ranging from an increase to a decrease. The minimum production reached around 771.52 thousand tons in 2001, equivalent to approximately 58.56% of the average total local fish production during the period. The production quantity then increased to a maximum of about 2.039 million tons in 2019, accounting for approximately 154.76% of the average total local fish production during the period. The overall local fish production totaled around 26,351.19 million tons, with an annual average of about 1,317.56 thousand tons over the same period. Furthermore, the results indicated a consistent and statistically significant positive relationship between the quantity of fish consumed and the population (Factor 1), as well as between the quantity of fish consumed and the quantity of imports (Factor 5). Specifically, an increase in the population by one million individuals annually and an increase in the quantity of imports by one thousand tons annually would lead to an annual increase in fish consumption by approximately 1.97 tons and 0.185 tons, respectively. Similarly, a positive and statistically significant relationship was found between the quantity of fish consumed and the population in millions (Factor 1). An increase in the population annually would result in an approximate 1.98-ton increase in fish consumption. | ||||
