Abstract | ||||
Background: Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are characterized by the presence of chronic gastrointestinal symptoms with digestive tract origin without organic abnormality . Purpose The prevalence of FGIDs among health care workers in Aswan University Hospital. Materials and methods: A questionnaire using Rome IV criteria was administered to 300 healthcare workers older than 18 years at Aswan university hospital. Results Among the studied cases, IBS was the most common FGIDs (40.7%), while functional dyspepsia was found in 33.3. Functional constipation came third with a percentage of 11%, while functional diarrhea was in only 5.3% . Patients with FGIDs were significantly younger (P-value: 0.001) and had a significant (P-value: 0.001) longer duration of working hours per day compared to participants without FGIDs { median age of 25 +/- 0.47 SE (range:18-58) with a median number of working hours per day of 12 + /- 0.36 SE (range: 6-24)} and{median age 35 +\- 1.107 SE (range: 18-58) a median number of working hours per day of 8 +/- 0.316 SE ( range: 6-24)}, respectively. Conclusion: The most commonly FGIDs was IBS . The most significant risk factors for FGIDs were age and working hours.
