Abstract | ||||
Background: There have been numerous studies on different techniques for fixation-based reduction of mandible fractures. Tension band wiring could be one of the internal fixation methods with good management results. The present work aimed to assess the feasibility, applicability, and surgical outcomes of tension band wiring in fracture mandible reduction and stabilization. Methods: This interventional clinical trial study was conducted on eighteen patients with anterior mandibular fractures who underwent fixation with a conventional miniplate (2.0 mm thickness fixed with screw 2.0 mm in diameter, Arch bars [Erich’s], or interdental wiring, or intermaxillary fixation by IMF screws were placed in both upper as well as lower (maxillary and mandibular arches), tension band was applied for reduction of fracture mandible. Patients were assessed for appropriate reduction, fixation, fracture, and bending stability one day, two weeks, one month, and months following surgery. Results: The duration of surgery was 56.7 ±12.4, ranging from 40-90 minutes. The duration of the Tension Band Wiring procedure was 10 ± 2.7, ranging from 7–15 minutes, which lasted 18% of the duration of the surgery. Most patients, 17(94.4%), could open their mouths easily, and 16 (88.9%) closed their mouths normally. No pain in 5 patients (27.8%), mild in 10 patients (55.6%), and three patients (16.7%) feeling moderate pain. Conclusion: Before final rigid fixation, tension band wiring can be a fast, easy, and effective approach for bone reduction and stabilization. Additional benefits include a more accessible and clear surgical area, shorter operating times, and less instrumentation and assistance | ||||
