Abstract Background: Hypothyroidism is reduced production of the thyroid hormones due to gland malfunction. Opuntia Ficus Indica fruit was believed to be an antihypothyroid drug. Objectives: The goal is to determine The protecting properties of Opuntia Ficus Indica (OFI) in opposing to hypothyroidism caused by propylthiouracil (PTU) in Juvenile Rats. Materials and Methods: Rats have been split into four divisions at random: Ten rats for each were created as follows: The control group of rats received nothing or saline solution. Rats in OFI group were given 5 ml OFI juice/kg /day orally. Rats within the hypothyroid (PTU) group received (10 mg/kg of oral PTU every day (. Rats within the therapeutic (PTU+ OFI) group obtained PTU (10 mg/kg/day orally) and OFI (5 ml OFI juice/kg /day orally) for 28 days, gastric tubes were used to administer the therapies orally. The levels of serum T3, T4, and TSH were assessed at the conclusion of the trial. Studies utilizing histology and immunohistochemistry were used to investigate thyroid glands. Every measurement was examined statistically. Results: Hypothyroid (PTU) group showed reduced serum levels of T4 and T3, follicular distortion, follicular cell vacuolar degeneration, and blood capillary congestion. There were decreased BCL2 and increased Caspase 3 immunoreaction in cytoplasm of follicular cells. The prior histological and chemical alterations improved in the therapeutic (PTU+ OFI) group that displayed apparently normal thyroid follicles, increased BCL2 and decreased Caspase 3 immunoreaction in cytoplasm of follicular cells in addition to increased serum levels of T4 and T3 Conclusion: administration of Opuntia ficus indica fruit juice significantly alleviated the deleterious histopathological, immunohistochemical, and biochemical changes in Propylthiouracil induced hypothyroidism. | ||||
