Abstract | ||||
The main objective of this study is to unveil the empathetic implicatures embedded in the language aspects of reference switching, demonstratives, and passive voice in the light of the two theories of John Lyons's (1977) empathetic deixis and Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson's (1995) relevance theory. The data analyzed are 323 empathetic deictic elements (i.e. 61 cases of reference switching, 131 cases of demonstratives, and 131 cases of passive voice) occurring in 74 Surahs from the Holy Quran. The analysis has revealed that each of the language aspects under investigation can imply both emotional proximity to or emotional distance from the referent(s)/the addressee(s). Moreover, some syntactic and semantic properties of these three language aspects are found to stand as an evidence of the empathetic implicatures intended. Finally, both pragmatic processes of decoding and inference are deduced to be essential for apprehending the empathetic implicatures embedded. The pragmatic process of inference is recommended to be applied through consulting authentic exegeses when dealing with empathetic deictic elements. | ||||
