Abstract | ||||
ABSTRACT This paper presents results of the use of AE signatures to detect the on-set and propagation of cracks associated with a thrust bearing race. To facilitate the investigation a special purpose built test-rig was employed which allowed for accelerated crack initiation on a bearing race. It is concluded that sub-surface initiation and crack propagation is detectable with AE technology. The results revealed that selecting the AE technique can significantly improve defect identification in comparison to conventional methods of analysis. | ||||
