Abstract | ||||
Background: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is a form of newborn brain damage caused by oxygen deprivation and restricted blood flow. It is one of the leading causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality, with an estimated occurrence rate of 1.5 per 1,000 live births Aim: The study aim was to evaluate effect of educational guidelines program on nursing performance for neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. Subjects and Method: Design: A quasi-experimental design was employed. Setting: The study took place in Neonatal Intensive Care Units affiliated to Suez Canal University Hospitals and Ismailia Medical Complex. Subjects: Convenient sample of 60 nurses and purposive sample of 60 neonates. Tools: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy questionnaire and Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy observational check lists were used to gather data. Results: Nurses had poor knowledge and incompetent practices levels prior to the implementation of the educational guidelines program comparing with the majority who had good and competent practices levels post program implementation. Conclusion: Educational guidelines program regarding care of neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy had significantly improved nurses‘ knowledge and improved their practices levels. Also, there were positive significant correlations between nurses‘ knowledge and practices levels before and after implementation of educational guidelines program. Recommendations: Orientation program for newly employed nurses about care of neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy should be provided | ||||
