Abstract | ||||
Background: COVID was representing a global public health crisis affected the general population and there were insufficient data on its impact on vulnerable populations, such as pregnant women. It is recognized that pregnant women are at high risk of acquiring viral respiratory infection and developing severe pneumonia, due to the physiologic changes in their immune and cardiopulmonary systems, therefore the pregnant women are particularly susceptible to COVID adverse outcomes .Moreover; COVID not only have a great impact on maternal heath but also it has a negative impact on the neonatal outcome including; increased risk of miscarriage, fetal growth restriction, NICU admission and preterm birth. Objectives: this study aimed to evaluate the effect of COVID infection during pregnancy on the maternal and the neonatal outcome. Subject and methods: This study was a case control study conducted upon 90 mothers had history of COVID infection during pregnancy and 90 mothers hadn’t history of COVID during pregnancy, the mothers age and parity were matched with the former group, documentations were done for maternal symptoms, mode of delivery, complications, neonatal outcome, Apgar, NICU admission and documentations of laboratory investigations also were done. Results: Higher frequency of neonatal still birth, intrauterine growth restriction, lower APGAR score after 1min & 5min and absent Moro reflex were reported in infants with past history of prenatal maternal COVID infection than controls. Conclusion: prenatal maternal COVID infection had a great impact on the mothers and neonatal health. | ||||
