Abstract | ||||
Objective: The mode of connection between overdenture and its supporting implants should control the transmission of harmful forces to supporting structures. Frictional contact between nylon cap and attachment in addition to incomplete osseointegration between bone and implant may affect the selection of attachment type to ensure less amount of bone resorption, maintenance periods and longer lifetime of the implant/attachment. Methods: Six finite element models were prepared, three for the locator attachment while the other three for ball attachment. Each three models simulate vertical implant, and inclined implants by 10° and 20°. Frictional contact between implant and cortical bone simulated the incomplete osseointegration. Results: non-linear static analysis results showed larger cap movement on ball attachment, which indicate its fast wear and failure. On the other hand cap performance with ball attachment is relaxing cortical bone with different implant angulation. Conclusions: Locator attachment may survive longer than ball attachment. While the cap life time with ball attachment is shorter due to its large movement in comparison to its equivalent with locator attachment. Spongy bone is generally insensitive to attachment type, while the cortical bone is relaxed under ball attachment. | ||||
