Abstract | ||||
Background: Endocan is a specific molecule of human endothelial cell and it is a promising biomarker to predict sepsis and mortality. Serum levels of endocan increase in patients presenting with sepsis. This study aimed to evaluate the serum endocan levels in neonates suffering from sepsis to assess its value in early diagnosis .Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Department, Zagazig General Hospital during the period from January to July 2018 with a total number of 24 neonates diagnosed as early onset sepsis. Serum Endocan was measured before treatment and 3 days after treatment. Results: Serum Endocan level was significantly higher before treatment than after treatment. There was a positive significant correlation between Endocan level and sepsis, P value < 0.05, and r-value=+0.33. Conclusions: Serum endocan can be used for diagnosis of early onset sepsis, serum endocan is a good diagnostic measure of neonatal sepsis. Keywords Endocan,Marker, Sepsis. | ||||
