Abstract | ||
This study was conducted in an attempt to identify rural people's awareness of the culture of self-employment and their readiness towards it, the relationship between rural people's personal characteristics and their degree of awareness of the culture of self-employment and their readiness towards it, the obstacles that prevent many rural people from moving towards self-employment, and the mechanisms for developing their awareness of the culture of self-employment, its importance, and their attitude towards it. This study was conducted in Assiut Governorate. Three centers were selected: Assiut, El Badari, and Sahel Selim. One village was then selected from each center: Awlad Ibrahim, Manshat Hammam, and Nazlat El Malek, respectively. The number of rural households in the three villages was counted, reaching 22,916. Based on the Krejcie-Morgan equation, the sample size reached 372 rural households. A sample of young people from each household was selected by village informants, provided they were in the working age group (20-35 years). Data were collected during January and February 2023, and appropriate statistical methods were used to analyze the data and present the results. The most prominent findings were: - 80.6% and 75.8% of rural residents reported low and medium levels of awareness of the culture of self-employment and their willingness to engage in it, respectively. -A significant correlation was found between the following variables: level of educational attainment, family size, exposure to information sources, opinion leadership, level of ambition, and innovation, and rural residents' awareness of the culture of self-employment. Meanwhile, a significant correlation was found between the level of educational attainment, family size, exposure to information sources, organizational membership, opinion leadership, and level of ambition, and rural residents' willingness to engage in self-employment. -The most significant obstacles preventing many rural residents from engaging in self-employment include a lack of experience, the poor skills and capabilities necessary to manage self-employment and projects, a lack of support and funding necessary to establish, develop, and grow self-employment, and a lack of awareness and knowledge of the facilities and services provided by institutions concerned with self-employment. The most important mechanisms for raising awareness of the importance of the culture of self-employment and their readiness to embrace it were shifting society's culture from seeking government work to self-employment, and expanding and diversifying the creation of financing systems that suit emerging self-employment projects. The study reached a set of recommendations based on the findings. | ||
