| Abstract | ||
| الحمد لله وحده والصلاة والسلام على من لا نبي بعده، وبعد فهذه الورقة البحثية لا تهدف لبيان التعايش في الإسلام من المنظور الإسلامي (الذات)، كما أنها لا تناقش شبهات أو مغالطات عن التعايش في الإسلام، وإنما هي حوار بين رأيين مختلفين لا يمثل أحدهما الذات، فهي إن صح التعبير حوار الغرب مع الغرب نفسه. وتكمن أهمية هذا النوع من الحوار في بيان مدى الاهتمام العالمي للوصول إلى معرفة حقيقة التعايش في الإسلام، إضافة لما يمثله هذا النوع من الحوار من بيان أن الآخر ليس بالضرورة أن يكون مُغرضا أو مُعاديا متى ما عرف الوقائع بتجرد وموضوعية، بل ربما يكون أفضل من يَعرِض الحقائق، ويسوِّقها للمعرفة الإنسانية عالميا بلغة المحايد الذي لا تلاحقه تُهمة الغرضية وتلميع الأنا في عرض ما انتهت إليه قناعاته، وقادته إليه البراهين والأدلة. فهذا البحث هو حوار بين شخصيتين غربيتين لهما مكانة مرموقة في الأكاديميا الغربية، ومشهود حضورهما الواسع في ميدان الدراسات الشرقية، والإسلامية تحديدا، وهما المستشرق برنارد لويس والمستشرق توماس أرنولد، وسنستعرض في هذا الحوار رؤيتيهما حول التعايش في الإسلام، والمنهجية التي ساقت كلا منهما لبناء رؤيته. All praise is due to Allah alone, and may peace and blessings be upon the one after whom there is no prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him), and thereafter: This research paper does not aim to present coexistence in Islam from an Islamic (self) perspective, nor to refute misconceptions or distortions about it. Rather, it is a dialogue between two differing opinions, neither of which represents the self. In other words, it is—so to speak—a conversation of the West with itself. The importance of this type of dialogue lies in highlighting the extent of global interest in knowing the reality of coexistence in Islam. It also demonstrates that “the other” is not necessarily malicious or hostile, as long as they learn the facts with objectivity and impartiality. Such a person may, in fact, be the best to present the truth and convey it to global human knowledge in the neutral language of one who is free from accusations of bias or self-promotion, simply presenting what their convictions and the weight of evidence have led them to. Thus, this study is a dialogue between two prominent Western figures, both of whom hold distinguished positions in Western academia and are well-known for their extensive presence in the field of Oriental and, more specifically, Islamic studies: the Orientalist Bernard Lewis and the Orientalist Thomas Arnold. In this dialogue, we will examine their respective views on coexistence in Islam and the methodology each employed in developing their perspective. | ||
