Abstract | ||||
An experimental analysis method for determining the torsional mode fracture toughness for rotating shafts is proposed based on a new calibration function. Also, the results of the experimental investigation are compared with the corresponding analytical results. The agreement between the analytical and experimental results obtained by a specially developed instrumentation is reasonably good. The main advantage of the new procedure presented in this work, is that it gives a fracture toughness value which is based on the start of physical crack extension. On the other hand the results obtained according to the new experimental method shows that, the method of analysis followed for the determination of fracture toughness value should give a Kiiic value which is independent of specimen size and geometry. | ||||
