Abstract | ||||
The rapid spread of the concept of sustainable development, which relies on the development of laws and frameworks governing the behavior of individuals and institutions towards society and the surrounding environment, has made it the way to the well-being of all societies, and the concept of sustainable development has been closely linked to knowledge-based societal development. Several studies have confirmed that factors leading to economic growth are material factors that are decreasing in their use, and immaterial factors such as knowledge, innovation and education, whose intensive use and employment increase their accumulation and therefore affect economic development effectively and positively. Thus, out of an interest in the role of knowledge as an economic resource affecting the development of societies, many terms have emerged that reflect trends towards knowledge as an economic resource and basis for the progress of States; At the top of these terms is the term economics of knowledge or knowledge-based economy based on a number of pillars such as innovation, development, education, information and communications technology (Rem and Nada, 2018, p 76). Based on the above, this study is interested in analyzing the ability of the economics of knowledge to achieve sustainable development, presenting the experience of Singapore to catch up with economics of knowledge, the challenges of transitioning to it, and the role of economics of knowledge in achieving sustainable development in Singapore. It also provides some lessons learned to Egypt from Singapore's experience in achieving sustainable development through the economics of knowledge.
